The last book I wrote hit the New York Times Bestsellers List.

That’s fun, but that’s not where I began.

No one begins there.

This is where I began.

It’s a series of prom ads I pitched to a tuxedo rental company I was writing for. (These are the actual cards I pitched to the client.)

I was trying to get teenagers to come to the mall and get fancy pants someone else had worn.

Look at those ideas.

“Just because ‘prom’ rhymes with ‘mom’ doesn’t mean you should take her.”

I know what you’re thinking, “Jon Acuff is a genius.”

Only I’m not and the company I worked for didn’t think so either.

That’s OK though, because it wasn’t the end of my writing career, it was the beginning.

And the beginnings in my life aren’t over. I’m in the middle of one right now. Is it all going well? Nope. But that’s OK, but it’s just a beginning.

Next time doubt tells you that you’re not where you should be, remember everybody has a beginning. Everybody has thousands of beginnings because it’s the only way you ever get to finish.

What’s a beginning you’re working on?
